Professions

Professions are "jobs" in the game that you can give to your character to make money and items for themselves and others. There are three types of professions, choose yours carefully. Excepting the Secondary Professions (of which you can have all three in addition to two of your choice), you may only choose two from the list of crafting professions and gathering professions (two gathering, two crafting, or one of each).

All Categories of Professions are followed with an (A) or (H) to represent Alliance or Horde. The descriptions of each category will be almost identical, the differentiation is made for ease of searching for a person on one side or the other (provided the person puts a link like "Category:Jewelcrafter (A)" in double brackets somewhere in their profile).

Crafting Professions

Alchemy (Category:Alchemist)

Blacksmithing (Category:Blacksmith)

Enchanting (Category:Enchanter)

Engineering (Category:Engineer)

Jewelcrafting (Category:Jewelcrafter)

Leatherworking (Category:Leatherworker)

Tailoring (Category:Tailor)

are the crafting professions. Any class, side, and race can learn two of these at most. Specific classes benefit more from one profession than they would another, for instance, a cloth wearing class would benefit more from alchemy, enchanting, engineering or tailoring than they would blacksmithing or leatherworking. If you choose to buy all of your materials (or you have another to supply the necessary materials), you can always choose two of the crafting professions. For an easier more self-reliant means of crafting, you should choose a gathering skill of some type to compliment your crafting skill. Two of the crafting professions do not require a gathering skill as much as the others. These are tailoring (which relies most heavily on cloth collected from defeated enemies in the game) and enchanting (which comes with a disenchanting skill to destroy magical items of uncommon or better quality in order to obtain materials necessary for the skill); both make minimal use of specific items from the gathering professions (such as a few herbs, a few leathers, a few ores).

Gathering Professions

Herbalism (Category:Herbalist)

Mining (Category:Miner)

Skinning (Category:Skinner)

are the gathering professions. Any class, side and race can learn two of these at most. Specific Crafting Professions benefit more from one of these than the others, excepting tailoring and enchanting which pull very little from any of the gathering professions (which is why many people who decide to go with Enchanting also pick up Tailoring and vice-versa). Some people may choose to go with two gathering skills, forgoing any crafts, using the materials gathered to make money by selling them to others instead. Suggested pairings are as follows: Herbalism--Alchemy; Mining--Blacksmithing, Jewelcrafting or Engineering; Skinning--Leatherworking.

Secondary Professions

These are the "free" professions, which means everyone regardless of side, race, or class can pick up all three of them and still choose two from the other categories. The secondary professions include

First aid (Category:Medic)

Cooking (Category:Cook)

Fishing (Category:Fisher)

and are reliant mostly on loot and the time spent using them.
